Sturtevant, Wisconsin, September 25, 2006 – Two records were set in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 16, possibly landing members from four Wisconsin ski teams in the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records. The official record for the world's largest human water-skiing pyramid was accomplished on Lake Wazeecha by 48 skiers who created four pyramid formations. Ski teams participating in the pyramid were: the Mad City Ski Team, Madison; the Badgerland Ski Team, Waukesha; the Aqua Skiers, Wisconsin Rapids; and the Beaverland Must-Skis, Beaver Dam.
The feat also set a record for the National Show Skiers Association (NSSA). The group pulled off the record-breaking pyramid on their ninth attempt, breaking the previous NSSA record of 44 skiers in a pyramid. An even split of 24 men and 24 women stayed in formation for 20-seconds, ten seconds longer than the required guideline by the Guinness Book of World Records. The accomplishment will be added as a new record category in the Guinness Book of World Records, pending verification by Guinness.
Three Evinrude® E-TEC® 225-hp outboard engines pulled the group, estimated at a combined weight of three tons and using 5,300 feet of rope. Skiers who participated in the pyramid range in age from the youngest, nine-year olds Libby Horan from Waukesha, Wis., Riane Wilke from Beaver Dam, Wis., and Carly Cates from Madison, Wis. to 51-year old Dave Bell from Beaver Dam, Wis. who has been skiing for 26 years.
